Self proclaimed as punk/crunk/funk, Frank Bell plays up on the obscurity of his style, immediately intoxicating listeners with his unpredictable sound and leaves them wanting more. Bell utilizes elements of hip-hop, jazz, Calypso, classical, funk, folk, rap and pop; it may read like a jumbled mess but his use of eclectic instruments, lyrical prowess and intimate knowledge of rhythm and melody cause his songs to become an explosion of breathtaking sound when brought together.
Jazz music combined with spoken rhyme is distinctive as jazz rap style, which became popular in the late 1980's- early 1990's. In Bell's first track, "Nothing Lasts FOURever", a fusion of plucked string, light drum, brass and rap seamlessly merge into this inimitable style. Just released this year, "FOURever" is a stand out recording. His words speak to the title; no matter what they have been through together he is ready to move on, commemorated by the song. The lyrics are extremely clever to describe an age old concept, "the time has come to realize its only fumes that we're running on. The brass in this song punctuates the jazz feel and as he ends it on nothing more than his own voice the listener can relate to his emotional expression.
"Electric Sheep" puts string instruments into a blender with electronically generated beats and whips up a smoothie of a song that conjures up visuals of busily flying bees due to its almost hectic pace. The rhythm on this song is perfectly timed, causing just a slip of frantic panic to bubble up inside the listener. The very moment that fright seems too much to bear, Bell tosses in a recording of an operator instructing us to "please hang up and try again", which adds a level of much needed humor bringing a smile and lowering the heart rate.
Throughout the five available songs on his MySpace page, Bell displays his penchant for various musical styles and utilizes an array of instruments to create his sound. Bell's own voice is a powerful instrument used on four of his five songs and he takes care not to drown it out with music; smooth but simultaneously vulnerable he is clear and easy to listen to. On "Red" his voice is recorded in an almost hauntingly hollow sound as a perfect compliment to the reflectively dark lyrics.
With over 130,000 views to his page and a combined total of just under 36,000 total plays of his tracks, Frank Bell is carving out a strong presence for himself in the online world; his humorous song "The Penguin" has had over 11,000 plays alone. Three of his 5 songs are available for download ("The Penguin", "Tread Soft" & "Electric Sheep") on his MySpace page http://www.myspace.com/frankbell. Which studio do you pick to record at? This is a question that no doubt every musician or band will face at some point in time. This article will give you a few pointers to help pick the studio that is right for you.
Cost/ Availability
You first consideration should be cost and the availability of the studios that you can afford. You should have some sort of budget worked out prior to shopping for a studio. A good rule of thumb is the 10 studio hours per song to record and mix. On the average it will take approximately 10 hours to record and mix each song that you want to record. Choose a studio that you can record your entire project in (Ex 10 Songs x 10Hrs per=100 studio hours, studio a rates are $40 per studio hour, total cost is $4,000). Once you have a few studios identified as possibilities, you need to see which will fit into your time schedule. Say you want to start recording in two weeks however studio a has a six month waiting list, obviously you wont be able to record there unless you wait.
Equipment
The next thing you should consider is equipment. Does studio a have top of the line vintage gear and studio b have mid grade equipment? A little research into studio equipment may be in order if you are not well versed in studio gear.
Listen to CD's
Have the studios make up some demos of other bands that have recorded there. Listen to the CD's on as many different stereos as you can (car, home, friends car ect...). This should give you some idea of how your CD will sound like when it is complete.
Meet the Engineer
Meet the engineer that will be working with you on your project and ask about past experience and get references from other bands that they have worked with. Call the references and ask what was it like working with the engineer. Listen to tapes that were recorded at the studio that you are considering by the engineer that you will be working with. If the studio balks at these requests they may be hiding something so beware!
Mixdown
Automated mixing boards used to be only for the large studio projects with huge budgets. This is no longer the case. If a studio you are considering recording in has an automated mixer it is a big plus and should be considered a very big advantage.
There are many other things to consider when picking a studio however this should give you the basics and a good start, good luck and happy recording!

Many people assume that improvisation is magic and that it takes a magician to be able to just sit down at a piano and spontaneously create music. They couldn't be more wrong! There's a method to the magic.
Just like visual artists, we musicians just don't slap paint on a canvas and call it a painting. We know what we're doing (hopefully) and create using some kind of technique or method.
The lesson piece "Winter Scene" is an improvisation that uses 2 chords in the left hand while the right hand improvises. The background of this aural painting - the chords, we're created first.
I used something called a sus 4 chord. This chord raises the third to the fourth to create an ambiguous sound. A sound that's perfect for creating a chilly ambiance. Once the chords were chosen, I used an ostinato pattern for them. The chords were changed every 4-bars or so and that's that - a complete harmonic textural background over which we paint our melodies!
Many painters will lay out and create the background of their paintings first. The background sets the mood. They may use certain colors or textures to create this mood but once the background is set foreground elements are added.
We can look at "Winter Scene" much the same way. The background is the ostinato pattern. The foreground is the improvised melodies we create with the right hand.
This short but effective piano improvisation utilizes time-tested methods to bring about a unique piece of music!

The First Meeting
"I first met Michael Jackson at a recording studio on Beverly Blvd. in Hollywood, where he was three quarters of the way through finishing what would be the largest selling album in history. CBS records indicated that the project was between myself and another very well known photographer whose identity was never divulged to me.
Michael wanted to personally meet both candidates before deciding who he wanted to work with on the album package. I know now after having worked a substantial amount of time with Michael on other projects since, that he needed someone that was at the top of his profession, wasn't egotistical, was trustworthy and creative. But most importantly someone who would treat him with delicacy and consideration, who wasn't threatening or offending.
My first impression of Michael as he slowly and carefully moved through the studio doors where our meeting would take place was that he was taller and thinner than I had expected. His hand shake was very delicate with hardly a squeeze, and I was very conscious to return the same.
As we talked, Michael would ask me questions in his whispered voice about my likes and dislikes. I could tell from the way he poised his questions, that in a sly way, I was being highly scrutinized. That's when I first realized how important it was to Michael to work with the exact kind of person that would make him feel comfortable. Our meeting lasted about twenty minutes and we parted with a cordial good-bye.

How Can I Teach Myself To Sing? - It's Easier Than You Think
Many people ask themselves 'how can I teach myself to sing?' as the cost and time associated with learning from a professional instructor is horrendous not to mention the scrutiny you must learn under. How then can you teach yourself such a complex skill to a degree that can make people sit up and listen when you break out in song? Well with the wealth of resources on the internet and a few tips you can easily better your voice.
Firstly there are a few things you can do yourself that will help you develop a good singing voice and expend your range.
- Breathing
If you learn to breath correctly while singing you will go a long way to improving your voice. One issue many people have is that they hold their breath while singing rather than letting the air flow through them. If you do not have enough breath to sing long notes then you need to develop a better breathing. To do this you must draw breath into your diaphragm down at the bottom of your lungs instead of what is called belly breathing or chest breathing it is called diaphragmatic breathing. An exercise you can do for this is to place a hand on your diaphragm and a hand on your chest and breath in and out steadily, while doing this make sure the hand on your chest does not move much at all while the pother hand should be moving with your expanding and retracting diaphragm. Once you can breathe properly and learn how to sing without holding back you can really start to get into it.
- Emote
While technical skills are vital if you cannot move people with your voice you are not much of a singer. When singing even practicing be emotive, use your whole body and face and limbs to show the emotions you are feeling when you are singing the song. A singer who cannot bring emotion into their voice is like a flame without any heat, it fulfils one criteria but it is not complete.
- Practice
As simple and clichd as it sounds practice is vital, it may not make perfect but it does make much, much better! Do not over do it and get a sore throat but sing whenever you can! Sing in the car! Sing in the shower! Sing when making a meal! Make music and singing an every day part of your life and experiment while you do it. You will learn a lot this way and you will become more comfortable with your voice and breathing. Also while practicing if you can use a mirror to sing in front of you can see how you body reacts when you sing, changing slight things with your posture and face when using a mirror can give you remarkable changes in your voice you may not be able to get if you cannot see yourself.
While there are a great many things more than this you can do to learn singing by yourself these is a good start. Then comes the hard bit, the technical skills and training yourself to find the correct pitch and tone and many other detailed and complicated aspects of singing. To teach yourself to sing you now need resources and lucky for you the internet is a great place for these things. How can I teach myself to sing online you ask? Well you could trawl through youtube and various websites but there are an abundance of professional courses out there you can download that give you an amazing wealth of skills that you can use from your own home. Using teach yourself singing software is the only way to get past a certain level of singing you can learn yourself without these resources.
Convinced you can learn to sing without forking over stacks of money and time to an instructor?Want an amazing singing voice that will make people really sit up and listen? If so you need a self learning resource to teach yourself to sing click here to see which product on the market is best for you! http://www.squidoo.com/learn_to_sing_software_product_review

Micing a Kick Drum
This months tip deals with micing kick drums.
You wouldn't believe how many people ask me about micing their kick drums. It leads me to believe people really don't know how to.
-ON SOAPBOX-
It became so fashionable in the mid-90's through the early 2000's to use MIDI or sampled dum sounds in productions that many people now have no idea how to record a "real" drum when the "band" or "live" sound came back in.
-OFF SOAPBOX-
So, first things first. You need to make sure the actual sound source, in this case the drum, sounds as good as it can sound. You might have to "sell" the idea to the drummer that just because his drum set sounds or works a certain way in a live setting, that might, (probably) won't sound good in the studio.
One of the initial assessments you must make is determining the value of the drum. This isn't a precise science and if you are not a drummer, this probably won't be common knowledge. But it is pretty easy to learn. The next time you are in your local music store drooling over the latest TC Electronics piece, work your way over to the drum department. Pay close attention to the difference in the shells between the inexpensive sets (say $1000 or less) and the more expensive sets (those over $1000). If the shell is pure wood, like maple or birch, it typically needs less muffling in the recording process. If the shell is some type of wood or fiberglass wrap, as commonly found on less expensive kits, they normally require more muffling for recording purposes.
Less muffling usually means keeping the front (non-beater) head on. This way, the drum can vibrate fully and resonate completely. The ringing may sound like too much, but most of the ring will be lost in the mix. Again, this is a different mindset than live. In a live situation, you would want to control the ring as much as possible to avoid feedback. If you start recording and the drum is still ringing too much for your taste, start muffling a little bit at a time. A thin blanket laid inside the drum will usually do the trick.
With less expensive drums that need more muffling, take the front head completely off or at least make sure that there is a good size mic hole cut into the head. Muffle with pillows and/or blankets.
There are beater, or back, heads that come pre-muffled. If possible, use a head that is not muffled. These muffled heads work great in a live setting but do not give you as much control in the studio. Add or take away muffling as needed. Keep this in mind, though, although much of the ringing will still be lost in the mix, the tone that an inexpensive shell puts out is not nearly as "sweet" as a better shell. It is usually in your best interest as an engineer to cut as much of this ring without losing all of the tone.
The second aspect of micing a kick drum is the mic itself. Usually, a dynamic mic with the largest diaphragm you can find is the best bet. My all-time favorite mic for kick drums is the EV RE20. This mic is fairly expensive for a dynamic mic, though, and many home studios do not have them in their mic aresenal. The AKG D112 is a good choice. Sennheiser has its E series that is pretty good. If all else fails, you can always use a Shure SM57. You need a couple of these in your studio anyway.
The last part of micing your kick drum is the mic placement. A few inches one way or another can make or break your recording, so experiment, experiment, experiment! As a general rule, the more muffled your drum is the deeper inside the drum you want to place your mic. Start with the mic flush with the front head with the mic facing the beater and keep moving the mic further and further into the drum until you get the perfect balance between tone and the "slap" or "click" of the beater.
Here are some tricks that I have personally used with good results:
- to get more "click" or beater sound
Switch beater from cloth to wood. These can be bought at your local music store.
On top of pillows or blankets, sit a cinder block. It gave me a "punchier" sound.
Use a seperate mic in back of the kick drum by the drummer's foot facing the beater.
- not enough low end
Set a chair a few feet in front of kick drum and drape a heavy blanket from the drum to the chair. (You may need to use a bit of duct tape to get the blanket to stay on the drum.) Set the mic under the chair facing the kick drum. This tends to focus the low end and let it develop a bit more before it reaches the mic.
Whew! That's alot of work, huh? Again, don't be afraid to experiment.

Lesson 13 - Key Signatures
Key signatures are a theoretical approach to knowing what scales, chords and ideas you can play during a song without worrying about playing wrong notes. You can use the chords in a song to figure out what key it is in or if you are using regular notation you can simply look at how many sharps and flats or flats there are at the beginning of the clef. Key signatures can be major or minor and be any of the 12 notes of music, such as A minor or C major. Key signatures can give a certain feelings or moods to a song as well, much like major and minor chords.
Circle of Fifths
An easy way to figure out what key your playing in is to use the circle of fifths chart. At the beginning of a sheet of notation music there are a group of sharps or flats. The lines these symbols are on affects the notes on that line for the duration of the song or until the key changes again. To use the circle of fifths chart you can just count how many sharps or flats there are on the staff and compare it to the chart. If your music has 1 sharp, it is F major. Make sure if there are sharps, you use the right side of the chart, since the left side is for flats. If there are 3 flats, the key is Eb major. The numbers inside the circle correspond to the number of sharps (right side numbers) and the number of flats (left side numbers). There are a lot of different style of the circle of fifths charts so make sure you know what chart your looking at and know what everything means.
Keys and Chords
You can also tell what key you're in by studying the chords you're playing. When you're playing just power chords using the root, 5th and 8th notes, you can judge by the root notes of the chords what key you're in. For example, using the chords C5, D5, G5 you could be in the key of Gmaj OR Cmaj since both keys contain the notes C, D, and G. To really narrow down the key you're in, you have to use chords that contain more notes. If you add in the 3rd to each chord it only leaves the key of Gmaj because the third of Dmaj is an F#, which doesn't exist in the key of Cmaj. This shows why keys are important. If you're playing these three chords, C, D, and G, you could maybe get away with playing a Cmaj scale for the melody by leaving out some notes, but it would be more to your advantage to use all the notes of the Gmaj scale.

Eminem/The Re Up Mixtape Review
Global rating of the product: 5 stars
Drug dependence, the murder of your best friend, the collapse of your marriage can break an individual. After the flood of issues in which Eminem was literally drowning during the last months, many people thought that the skilled rapper would retire from the rap game.
However Eminem is a stand up man with that thick skin that allowed him to resist to life tempests.
Eminem is back with his crew, stronger than ever, bringing to you his new hard worked on CD, the Re Up mixtape.
Joyful violin sounds, gunshots, hammering drum beats starts Shady Narcotics which is the prelude to the mixtape in which Eminem introduces his crew: D12, Obie Trice, 50 Cent, Stat Quo, Bob Creek and Cashis.
From the oldest to the newest members, everyone has his precise place and plays his role in this valuable team work.
Were Back: the shady soldiers are back, more offensive than ever, with razor blades alike words. Big mouth running haters be ready to be punched right in the face. Eminem, Obie, Bob Creek, Cashis and Stat Quo will smash the jealous hoes in the game. Any underground artist aims at becoming mainstream someday: so dont hate, congratulate!
Gunshots, numerous violins, a dark bassline totally situate the context: the arise of a lyrical battle is imminent.
The heat increases as Obie Trice spits lyrical bullets on a Pistol Pistol sample.
As the sky gets cloudy and darker, you can smell the smoke in the air. Bizarre and Kuniva reinforce the roughness of the hell of a murderous ambience. Be ready for war while keyboard, drums and dark murder vocals combined with some gunshots will portray you the Detroit hood like it is.
I think that Bizarre and Kunivas beautiful performance needs to be pointed out. I recommend you the song. Dont sleep on that one.
Everything Is Shady: let Cashis take over in the scurrilous themed song.
The Shady gladiators are teaming up and will leave their enemies lying lifeless, lyrically speaking.
Eminem and 50 Cent introduce you to The Re Up in a rhythmic beat box mode. The song is beautifully rhythmic, Eminems vocal performance is well handled from the beginning to the end. 50 Cent will keep on with the same beautiful spirit that will remind many of you of the Get Rich Or Die Trying album. Good job!
You Dont Know is a classic, already. I reviewed the song and the video a while ago.
Jimmy Crack Corn is based on a Yellow Brick alike musical background. The song is provocative. Eminem humors those who are running their big mouths in the rap game.
Trapped will feature RIP Big Proof as a tribute to the gifted fallen D12 soldier.
When Swifty and Kon Artis unite their talents, bombs are thrown on the scene. Swinging beats, light piano sounds mixed up with violins and keyboars will totally enhance the killa track.
Chord sounds, harpshichord notes, light piano sounds, a good dose of offensiveness, sharp and incisive words will underline Bob Creekwaters good performance. Bob Creek is one of the most underrated Shady Records signed artist, but he is nevertheless talented. Check him out!
I fully enjoyed Eminems Public Enemy track that gets political and offers some insight about assassination plots.
Eminem fully masters his flow and shows some good lyrical skills on the well handled song.
Eminem concludes the mixtape with No Apologies. In a long monologue, Eminem shows some lyrical dexterity and confronts critics. No apologies for being himself and for speaking his mind. The arsenic writer , the lyrical genius is back with some beautiful, poetic lines:
My head hit's the pillow, a weeping willow, i can't sleep, a pain so deep it bellows
But these Cellos help just to keep me mellow, hand's on my head, touched knees to elbow
I'm hunched over, emotion just flows over, these cold shoulders are both frozen, you don't know me
Monotonous piano and keyboard sounds contrast with the sudden introduction of bells and violins. Marshall Mathers voice and lyrics are an outlet for the bottled rage. The song fully enlightens Eminems lyrical mastery. I love the track, because it is unique in its creativity and outshines all the excellent tracks of the Re Up.
Globally speaking the Re Up enlightens the whole Shady Records crews artistic collaborations. Eminem is so sorry to disappoint all the people who nearly buried him lyrically and artistically. The tight emcee is backed by his crew that also shows some good skills.
The Re Up is worth your interest. Id strongly advice you to own it in your hip hop library.
